CHAPTER TWELVE

With a forty-five-minute window before my shift at Sugar Shack, I left the festival to its closing ceremonies and headed a few blocks over to the police station. The interior looked less intimidating than it had the night before, but was still a far cry from the kind of place I’d want to spend any amount of time in. An elderly woman sat behind the front desk, peering down her nose at a folded newspaper, furiously erasing something from the page with a blunt pencil eraser. With a frustrated grunt, she tossed the pencil down on the desk and reached for a coffee mug, cursing upon finding it empty, then swiveled an agitated glance in my direction. “What do you need?”

Awkwardly, I adjusted the strap of my bag and approached the counter. Glancing down, I saw the progress she’d made on the crossword puzzle. “Angelica’s puzzles are tough to crack,” I said, infusing a small chuckle into the statement.

The woman’s thin lips went even thinner. “Who the heck is Angelica?”

So much for polite conversation.

“Oh, I’m Rosella Midnight. I’m a columnist for the Winterspell Gazette. Angelica is the woman who comes up with the crossword puzzles.” I gestured toward the folded paper still clenched in her hand.

The woman followed the tip of my finger, considered her half-erased pencil smudges and crossed-out scribbling, then tossed the paper on the desk. “Bah! What do you need? Do you have an appointment?”

Gee, I was just making all kinds of friends today.

“I don’t have an appointment, but I was wondering if Marc Graves is still being held. He was arrested last night.”

The woman stared at me, then scoffed and rolled one hand through the air, indicating for me to spit it out.

“I was hoping to interview him for my article about the murder.”

The woman looked ready to tell me exactly what she thought of my request when suddenly Sam emerged from somewhere beyond the desk, stepping around a walled-off partition blocking the bullpen and the rest of the inner station from view.

“Rosella?”

The woman grabbed her paper and returned to her puzzle, seemingly uninterested in me. “Girl’s from the paper. Trying to stick her nose in the murder investigation.”

Sam’s jaw tensed. “I can handle this, Eleanor. Why don’t you go get a coffee?”

The woman shifted a sharp glance up at Sam but didn’t argue. With a shrug, she gathered her empty coffee mug, paper, and pencil, then shuffled off down the hallway to the right of the desk.

Once her footsteps faded, Sam stepped closer to the desk and folded his arms over his chest.

“Is Marc still here?” I asked, keeping my tone firm but polite. Clearly, Sam wasn’t taking the news of my assignment with the Order well. Though I couldn’t quite tell what his issue was. Was he upset I hadn’t told him? It’s not like we were close. I didn’t even remember him from our overlapping time at school. He’d been the one to point it out upon our first official meeting. So,
